New content
- The tricky bit is to decide where in the hierarchy of pages the content should live, and whether it should be on a page by itself, or be on an existing page exposed by a toggle that can be opened / closed on that page. (See next section.)
- For a new page, find the link on an existing Wiki page under which your new page will live. Hover over the “+ sign at the left of that text line, and then “Click to add below” (or above). This will both create the link TO the new page at that spot (correctly formatted), as well as the new page itself, where you will be left to add your content.
- It’s possible to use the “New page” link (in main Notion toolbar either on the left of the page in your browser or the hamburger icon in the upper left on the mobile Notion app) for key sections, then use the “Add to…” icon at the top to select where in the hierarchy of pages to put it. (Pages are saved simply by clicking outside the content creation dialog overlay.) BUT, turning that into the proper kind of link within the existing hierarchy is complicated (and I, Jay, can’t currently tell you how to do so.)
- For added content on an existing page, see the section below called “Text Formatting”
Our free account limits the number of “Items” we can have. “Items” are a new paragraph, image, or product link. So - at the expense of readability - we might start by having big paragraphs, combining what would usually be separate lines into one paragraph to conserve our item count. (The account is now at a paid level, supported by the members of the Facebook group for this boat. Thanks, group!)
Page placement, categories
- It’s important to avoid creating too-deep of page hierarchy, which create a user experience problem commonly called the “digital bends” (named after divers that get the bends when coming up from deep depths.) Our goal should be to combine modest hierarchy with collapsable “toggle” items on a page to reduce the hierarchy depth, such as on the Engines page.
- Your default choice should be to find a page where your new content might live, and put it there via a “toggle”. (See below on Text Formatting on how to create a Toggle entry.)
- New pages are likely most useful if you think there will be multiple entries under this topic, again e.g. the Engines page.
- Get consensus from all the editors before creating another top-level category (e.g. at the same level as Interior, Hull, …)
- If you create a new page, make sure you add an “icon”. (Hover over the area above the title, and the Icon, Cover, and Comment links will appear.) MOSTLY you will use Emojis (from the standard set available from Notion) for these.
- It’s nice when a new page has a Cover (photo), too. Try to use an Antares image if you can. Because of space limits in our Wiki, please try to keep the size under 150Kb. If you don’t have an image, try a “stock art” image from Unsplash (which appears as a tab in the pop-up that appears when you click to add a Cover).
Text formatting
- Create a “Toggle” entry by simply adding a new text line, select / highlight all the text, and in the formatting bar that appears set the formatting style to Toggle Heading 2 or 3 (depending on how “deep” in the hierarchy you are). Styles are in a drop-down on the left of that formatting bar, just to the right of the text “Ask AI” (edit: This may have changed…). Selecting Toggle (…) will create a toggle that defaults to opened, and has an “Empty toggle” text for you to create the new content.
- When there are multiple areas of content on a single page, e.g. 2 product recommendations (related or not), use a Toggle to collapse each to improve readability.
- Editors should always leave Toggles closed before finishing edits. (This way they get published to the public web wiki closed.)
- Be sure to set the text to links to sub-pages to bold.
- Link new pages at some appropriate level under an existing hierarchy. Yes, this can be complicated on Notion. When you make the link TO a new page,
Columns
- If there are BOTH page links to new pages (which should have icons), AND a triangle toggle to show/hide content on that page, place the toggles (triangles) BELOW the page links (icons), so the Page Links always remain at the top as Toggles are opened/closed. See the Hull (general) page as an example.
